There are many different type of meta tags out there and the three main ones are Title, Description and Keywords.
META NAME="TITLE"
META NAME="DESCRIPTION
META NAME="KEYWORDS"
The Meta Tag for keywords has totally fallen out of favor and most people do not even use it any longer, however title and description are still very useful. When dealing with these you should have different one for each page and they should be short, sweet and contain your best keywords.
For SEO work one should not spend a lot of time in this area, but one should have the basic Meta Tags.
